Implementing National Adaptation Plans through Nature-based Solutions for Sustainable Tourism in Coastal and Marine Areas

Panama City, Panama | May19-21, 2025

From May 19 to 21, the Government of Panama hosted representatives from Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic in Panama City for peer learning on nature-based solutions (NbS) in adaptation planning in the tourism sector, with a focus on coastal and marine areas.

In this peer learning exchange workshop, participants shared good practices, lessons, and examples emerging from their respective national adaptation plan (NAP) processes.

The overall objectives of this peer learning event were to:

  • facilitate an open technical discussion on nature-based solutions in NAP processes, with an emphasis on sustainable tourism in coastal and marine areas;
  • establish ongoing peer-to-peer exchanges and conversations on the challenges and opportunities in planning and implementing nature-based solutions for adaptation; and
  • identify opportunities within the NAP process to scale up NbS initiatives for sustainable tourism in coastal and marine areas.

The workshop included participation from institutional partners, including Wetlands International, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), and German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The NAP Global Network provided technical and financial support for the workshop through funding from the Government of Ireland.
