Introduction
More than 70 representatives from 21 countries gathered in Nadi, Fiji, to discuss climate change impacts and opportunities for adaptation.
Hosted by the Government of the Republic of Fiji and the NAP Global Network, this Targeted Topics Forum covered topics including gender inequalities, monitoring and evaluation, and strategic communications for national adaptation plan processes.
“The Government of Fiji is dedicated to the fight against climate change,” said Nilesh Prakash, head of Climate Change and International Cooperation to the Government of Fiji, at opening addresses on Wednesday, February 7. “But as we know, some level of climate change is now irreversible. To prepare for the impacts of climate change, we urgently need to create and implement adaptation plans that will build resilience for our home countries.”
The NAP Global Network brings together adaptation practitioners from around the world to discuss common challenges, successes, and opportunities in climate change adaptation planning. This week’s meetings were part of the Targeted Topics Forum series, which began in 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“Climate change is an intimidating challenge,” said Anne Hammill, Director of the NAP Global Network Secretariat at the International Institute for Sustainable Development. “But as the work being done by the countries here shows, through collaboration between adaptation specialists, development partners, and international experts, we can find effective strategies to prepare for the impacts of climate change and put them into action.”
The Government of Canada provided financial support for this week’s Targeted Topics Forum as part of its commitment to ensuring that developing countries are better prepared for—and can respond to—the impacts of climate change.
Unavoidable carbon emissions from participants’ flights to Fiji were offset through UNFCCC’s Climate Neutral Now initiative.
