The ninth global NAP Expo will take place in Dhaka from April 22 to 25.
Bangladesh will host the world’s flagship conference dedicated to National Adaptation Plan (NAP) processes. NAP Expo 2024, the ninth global NAP Expo since 2013, will take place in Dhaka from April 22 to 25 on the theme “Driving Transformational Adaptation through National Adaptation Plans.” Organized by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in partnership with various bodies and organizations, the NAP Expo aims to raise adaptation ambition by advancing the formulation and implementation of NAPs.
The NAP Global Network Secretariat team will be in Dhaka exchanging experiences and lessons on NAP processes, showcasing the outcomes of our support to 65 developing countries since 2014, and engaging with government and international organizations representatives, as well as stakeholders from the adaptation community of practitioners.
At this NAP Expo, the NAP Global Network’s activities will focus on:
- Delivering effective adaptation through NAP processes
- Peace and conflict: Aligning conflict-sensitive NAPs with peacebuilding processes
- Gender and social inclusion in the NAP process
- Developing and applying monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) tools

As climate change impacts worsen, countries need to scale up implementation of adaptation and track progress of NAP processes. However, the majority of countries haven’t yet achieved these important steps—only 42% of countries have incentives in place (30% of LDCs), 32% have subnational adaptation plans (15% of LDCs), and only 8% have published an evaluation or NAP progress report. These global trends call for strengthening these areas to drive effective and adequate climate change adaptation.
This session aims to bring best practices from NAP processes to showcase how the NAP process can drive transformational adaptation at the national level.
8.2 Training on NAPs: Developing and applying monitoring, evaluation and learning tools

As countries shift from planning to implementing adaptation interventions, having functional MEL tools for NAP processes becomes essential to help accelerate adaptation action and finance, ensure accountability and transparency to stakeholders, and contribute to learning from adaptation actions.
This session aims to address the obstacles in developing and applying MEL tools. participants will gain an overview of available material and guidance. Through further self-study of the material, participants will be able to conduct a training in their countries.
9.2 NAPs, Peace and Conflict: Aligning conflict-sensitive NAPs with peacebuilding processes

Conflict-affected countries dealing with national defense issues, the deaths and suffering of their people, and a fragile peace environment might find it challenging to prioritize climate change action. However, ignoring their adaptation needs while striving to promote peace would be a mistake, as there are close links between climate change and fragility.
This session will focus on how governments experiencing conflict can design and implement their NAP process in a way that responds to peace and conflict dynamics. It will draw on the experiences of developing country governments in initiating and implementing a conflict-sensitive NAP process. Our panelist will introduce the new guidance NAP Global Network and IISD experts developed on aligning NAPs with peacebuilding agendas.

13.3 How inclusive and cross-scale stakeholder engagement can drive transformational adaptation

Strengthening inclusive multi-stakeholder engagement across scales ensures that adaptation strategies benefit from a wide array of perspectives and expertise, leading to more robust and context-specific solutions. Through this collaborative approach, adaptation strategies can better address the specific vulnerabilities and needs of different stakeholders, from community members, such as youth, women, farmers, or entrepreneurs, to policymakers, the private sector, and researchers.
The objective of this event is to underscore the significance of bolstering inclusive multi-stakeholder engagement for climate change adaptation, especially for the formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of NAPs, while showcasing successful examples that have integrated this approach.
