The NAP Global Network at NAP Expo

Countries around the world are formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) to build resilience to the threat that climate change poses to their communities, economy, and ecosystems. The NAP Global Network Secretariat team will be at NAP Expo from August 22 to 26 to promote the exchange of experiences and knowledge on NAP processes, while re-connecting with our partners.

2.2.4 Promoting the inclusion of (micro,) small and medium enterprises ((M)SMEs) in national adaptation planning and implementation

Date: Tuesday, August 23, 2022
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (UTC +2)
Location: Moremi 1-3
Hosts: Adaptation Committee, International Trade Centre (ITC), and the NAP Global Network.

The event will scope out the challenges that (micro,) small and medium enterprises ((M)SMEs) face in adapting to climate change, building on, and drilling deeper into previous findings from the work of the Adaptation Committee and relevant partners; explore insights why it is of highest importance to include (M)SMEs in national adaptation planning and implementation; and learn how public actors can engage (M)SME actors in national adaptation planning and implementation.

3.2.2 Conflict-sensitive NAPs: Integrating conflict considerations in NAPs and vulnerability assessments

Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2022
Time:  2:00 pm – 3:30 pm (UTC +2) [Updated]
Location: Okavango 1
Host: The NAP Global Network

The NAP process offers an important opportunity to align a country’s peacebuilding, development, and adaptation strategies. This session will focus on how to integrate conflict considerations into the design and execution of the process to formulate and implement NAPs, including in climate vulnerability assessments. It will draw on developing country experiences and on guidance developed by the NAP Global Network on aligning adaptation planning and peacebuilding agendas.

3.3.3 Opportunities for gender-responsive adaptation planning and action through NAPs

Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2022
Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm (UTC +2) [Updated]
Location: Moremi 1-3
Hosts: Adaptation Committee, the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), and the NAP Global Network.

Countries around the world recognize that climate change affects women and men differently because of socially constructed gender norms, roles, and relations—which in many cases result in higher vulnerabilities for women and girls. Gender-responsive approaches in NAP processes seek to actively promote gender equality and empower women in adaptation policy and planning processes. The event will identify emerging trends, approaches, challenges, and opportunities in gender-responsive adaptation processes. It builds on gender-related research and guidance from the hosts, and will draw on the experience of countries in applying gender-responsive approaches to adaptation planning.

4.2.2 From Planning to Action: NAP implementation for climate-resilient development

Date: Thursday, August 25, 2022
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (UTC +2)
Location: Okavango 1
Hosts: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the NAP Global Network

With more than 38 countries having submitted their NAPs to the UNFCCC, the global focus is increasingly shifting to the implementation of the adaptation actions within NAPs. The session will provide a participatory dialogue with NAP practitioners and stakeholders to develop a better understanding of what NAP implementation entails, and highlight barriers, solutions, and opportunities for enabling effective NAP implementation. It will consider key factors including mainstreaming and financing strategies, potential barriers and solutions for effective NAP implementation, monitoring and reporting, and constitution of an informal network of NAP practitioners focusing on implementation.

4.2.3 Tracking Progress: Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) of National Adaptation Plans

Date: Thursday, August 25, 2022
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (UTC +2)
Location:  Okavango 2
Hosts: The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and the NAP Global Network.

With monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems included in the NAP process, countries can strengthen their accountability, provide reliable reporting of climate adaptation interventions, and gain insights into what is and isn’t working so they can adjust adaptation plans accordingly. The session will enable the sharing of perspectives, experiences, and lessons learned on MEL of national adaptation. It will focus on key challenges in establishing MEL systems, and solutions that have emerged in developing countries.
