Speaking in an interview, Climate Change Management Department Director Washington Zhakata said the AdCom reflects on what is transpiring, while at the same time giving a picture of the country’s plans in the fight against climate change. “Zimbabwe, through the NAP Global Network, is in the process of developing its first Adaptation Communication to the UNFCCC. The communication is a summary of what is being done and planned towards adapting to climate change. So tomorrow’s (today) meeting is aimed at validating the communication document,” said Zhakata.

Countries vary in their ability to develop national adaptation plans (NAPs) under the UNFCCC, given the capacity gap between developed and developing countries. This challenge was the focus of several side events during the Glasgow Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 26), which concluded on 13 November 2021.
An 8 November event on Adaptation: From Planning to Action sought to share lessons learned by countries developing their NAPs. New funding from donor countries to facilitate and build capacity for NAP planning and implementation was also announced.

Minister for Overseas Aid Colm Brophy committed €1m to the National Adaptation Plan Global Network which helps poor countries devise plans to prepare for the impacts of climate change, and €2.5m to the Least Developed Countries Fund.

Today’s funding package announced by Minister Brophy is made up of two elements:
The Government has committed €1 million for the National Adaptation Plan Global Network (to support national-level adaptation in developing countries) and €2.5 million for the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF).
