OUR PROGRAM

Since 2023, the NAP Global Network has worked with the Ministry of the Environment and Ecological Transition (METE) of Senegal to strengthen the country’s NAP processes—specifically to better integrate gender and social inclusion considerations into the planning and implementation phases but also to support awareness raising around NAP and increasing the quality of adaptation projects.

We first supported a gender analysis to assess how gender had been integrated into the NAP process, as well as opportunities, especially at the institutional level, to accelerate gender mainstreaming. This study has informed the next steps of the partnership including developing a gender mainstreaming methodological guide and a high-level sectoral analysis regarding its implementation across different sectors.

As part of our partnership, we also supported the development of a Loss and Damage Roadmap and strengthened the capacities of adaptation staff on the use of adaptation tools.

  • Guide to Integrate Gender in Senegal NAP Processes (in French) – We supported the development of this practical tool for the NAP team, building on Senegal’s experience but also the nine priority sectors so that they integrate gender wherever they are in the NAP process.
  • Gender mainstreaming in adaptation factsheets. To analyze the implications of gender mainstreaming across key sectors, a series of nine factsheets were developed. These briefs provided practical insights and entry points for agriculture, aquaculture, biodiversity, water resources, infrastructure, health, livestock, floods, and coastal areas
  • Loss and Damage Roadmap. As the topic of loss and damage gained traction, we supported the METE to develop a loss and damage roadmap involving key stakeholders to support an innovative and participatory process.
  • A 4-day training was organized on key adaptation tools for staff from the adaptation and loss and damage unit of the METE and ministries of priority adaptation sectors.
  • Adaptation bulletins. We supported the publication of three adaptation bulletins over the year to enhance awareness around adaptation and the NAP processes. Each one focused on one priority sector: coastal areas, agriculture, and fisheries.
  • Assessment of adaptation projects: analysis of a sample of projects across three sectors—coastal areas, fisheries and aquaculture, and agriculture and flood management—in Senegal. We supported the country in a multi-project assessment to guide the implementation of the next generation of adaptation projects they will support.   • Gender analysis: Provided support to carry out a gender analysis to inform the NAP process.
