OUR PROGRAM

The NAP Global Network established an in-country support program in 2024 with Belize’s Ministry of Blue Economy and Disaster Risk Management, as well as the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment, to support the development and implementation of Belize’s Coastal Zone and Fisheries sector NAP.

The program focuses on raising awareness among stakeholders and coastal communities about climate change and adaptation efforts, using local and scientific knowledge to protect marine resources, and developing decision-support systems to guide NAP implementation and enhance climate resilience in the sector.

2024

2nd Blue Economy Climate Resilience Forum and Fair: Hosted a forum for national and subnational actors and coastal communities during June 6-8, 2024, to discuss climate resilience strategies and the NAP process in Belize’s blue economy. Attended by more than 500 participants.
Skills and Capacity Development Plan: Developing a comprehensive skills and capacity development plan that includes technical guidelines for the implementation of the NAP in Belize’s Coastal Zone and Fisheries Sector. The plan will address medium- and long-term climate impacts and provides training sessions to support stakeholders in effectively implementing Belize’s NAP.
Hosting a Peer Learning Forum: Belize hosted a global-level forum on the alignment of NAPs and nationally determined contributions (NDCs) attended by 10 countries.

2023

Vulnerability and Livelihood Assessments for Caye Caulker and Placencia Bay: Through the Country Support Hub, conducted vulnerability and livelihood assessments in two coastal communities to evaluate their vulnerability to climate change and the impact on local livelihoods, informing the country’s sectoral NAP and providing baseline information for monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems.

The Belize NAP process is sector-driven and is coordinated and led by the National Climate Change Office. It aims to strengthen resilience by improving governance, addressing climate risks, and engaging stakeholders like youth, women, and indigenous communities. Sectoral NAPs have been developed for the water sector and coastal zone and fisheries sector, and a multisectoral NAP is under development for the country’s other major sectors.
